Network TopologyIn networking, there is three basic network topologies. The first type of network topology is called a 'Bus', in which the network nodes (computers) are cabled together in a line, which would be very similar to Christmas tree lights. This is the simplest form of networking, but unfortunately has drawbacks, for example if there is a faulty cable or a break somewhere, the network is spilt into two. The second network topology is called a 'ring', and this is similar to the 'bus' network, but that is where the difference ends. There is no end to the network as the start point and end points are joined together, i.e. a continuous loop. The third network topology is referred to as a 'star' network. In this topology all the nodes are connected to a central switch/hub/router and each node has a independent connection to the network, so if there is a break between one of the nodes and the central switch/hub/router, it will not affect any of the other nodes. |
